Unity Free Tutorials

First Tutorial Second Tutorial The first tutorial was creating the other side of the town this was really easy as it was mainly a copy and paste over which made my life easier. There were some objects and cubes that I had to create and could not copy but 99% of the other side we just copied and pastes. We then began creating more buildings and using more textures. I also made more depth by placing more buildings in the background in the distance. This really gave a feeling of there was more to the game. The second tutorial was adding even more buildings and even an alley way with a fence and a barrel with fire particles. This was very difficult to get right and the way I wanted it. But after lots of playing around with it. After some fine tuning it did work and turn out well. This really adds a city atmosphere to the game. I want to add more terrain but I feel it would not work well with the road stopping out of no where. Ill play around with this more over the next few days I fo

Alpha

Image
This is my alpha for my game. Im unsure whether to add more terrain around the area such as grasslands and have the city isolated. Or leave it how it is. There is also an underground in the subway. Im finding it tedious to do each and everything but now its mainly copy and paste which is not too bad. I also have gems in the game but want to change them to acorns or nuts. Im finding the textures difficult in getting them right for the size and not overlapping. Im on track with getting most things with my game I am just trying to make it more professional looking. Just adding in the sky and other small things such as music. I am struggling to find a character that suits what I am looking for. The subway and sidewalk and buildings close up The buildings from further back

First Tutorial Second Tutorial The first tutorial worked on depth and adding a subway entrance. This will really add to the game I feel and will make for a cool area for my character to explore. It was not really something I thought of until I watched the tutorial but I felt it would be a nice addition to the game. It was very tedious to make each individual step it would be easier if you could do it as a collective. It was also hard to have the steps aligned so the character could walk down them. It was really good to get a feel of the partly done subway area and made me realise how much I can do more with it. I might expand this a bit more as I feel it could be a main part of the level. The second part of the tutorial. There was more focus on the small details to make it look better and more professional on the outside. After this it started going on to creating more shops and buildings on the street. I will more than likely copy and paste a lot of these as it would be tedious

Week 8 Progress

Image
Im happy with my progress and feel like I have kept up to date with blogs and assignments best i could apart from one week where I was very ill. My weekly routine has really improved since the start it just took a couple of weeks to really get into it. I find this week has been hard as it was pilled with assignments especially for the group project. I enjoy the unity tutorials as I am more of technical kind of person. These also have been enjoyable as its a new skill that I have been learning and being forced to continue which in result is making me better at it. I am using the extra credit tasks especially as of recent. I find they are great way to catch up if you have fallen behind. I want to stay on top of assignments and have a better time management and I also hope to improve my writing more for second semester as I can now write more and ain't struggling to do so. The one thing i could improve is my vocabulary as I feel it could be better and that I tend to use the same sent

Week 8 Comments and Feedback

I am finding I m not receiving much feedback so I cam not really comment on this part of the feedback I received feedback weeks ago and that was weeks. I feel as if people are not fully using the randomiser correctly and are refreshing it until they have someone they knows blog to comment on. Its understandable to do it on blogs that people are posting what we are meant to comment on. I try to leave helpful feedback on every persons blog and try give them helpful feedback. I also give my honest opinion on there posts and game. I am finding other people writing as a helpful tool to see how I can improve my writing and see where I am faltering in my blog posts compared to others. Just from looking at others blogs I increased my writing length of  blog posts. I feel some people are just doing the comments and are finding them tedious so they just try to hit the word count. I do not think I did an introduction post sadly so people can not comment on that. I feel like my blog voices my op

Week 8 Reading and Writing

Image
I found the reading really helped me with my understandings of making a game. At the beginning I was confident thinking I could make a game then and there but the readings helped me realise how much goes into just the thought process of making a game. I felt some of the readings were boring but they were helpful.  I found the best way for the reading is to split the time equally to reading them but if I'm really interested or feel like its really useful I will continue reading until the end. Im quite happy with the game assignment but I am feeling very overwhelmed with the amount of assignments but I'm getting through it. My biggest accomplishment for this class is the fact my writing has improved so much and I'm more confident in my writing skills. Before I would be scared to start writings or would put them off but more and more each week I'm enjoying it and finding my writing flow. I sometimes feel I'm doing the blog posts in the wrong narrative or writing the w

First Tutorial Second Tutorial Third Tutorial My tutorials I have chosen are for building a city as my game will based in a small city scape. This is one third of the tutorials to have a complete city built to a small scale. The start of the first tutorial was mainly a run through of how to use unity 5 the end started off on the shape of our buildings and the path and the road. I then applied textures of them to make them look like how they are meant to. It was good to see how to do a continuous pattern for the path. The third and final tutorial showed how to add textures to the shapes to make them look like shop fronts and buildings. It was smart and quick work to have the same textures all the way around as you can only see the front of the shop. From then on it was simply copy and pasting after the new texture. This was quick and easy but made a huge difference to my game as it made it look more fitting to the game design I had envisioned and was hoping for. City Scape Sourc

Game Fun

Image
It was interesting to read about the predecessor of MMO's as MMO's are one of the biggest genres in the gaming world of PC's. It was helpful to see how the games cater to all there players needs and in turn makes it a reason for players to play the game more and more. The interest graph was something that made me think. The four type of players Killers, Achievers, Socialisers and Explorers. These are still applicable in almost all open world games today and MMO's this just shows how games haven't progressed much by way of original content. There might be reinvented content but they still follow the same design process but with better graphics. It then went on to talk about how these four group types view each other which I found to be very accurate as I have seen most of these myself while playing multiplayer games. Cards Source

Final GDD

Image
I found my gdd template had a lot of things that didn't apply to my game which made it harder to do. Some of the categories need me to be at a further place in the development. The gdd gives an insight in what I plan for my game. https://www.dundoc.com/project/4836 potential character Source

Unity Tutorial 05

Image
I was surprised at how simple it was to have the sky and lighting work. It really helps create a mood in the game. I also like how it has a lot of customisation. I used the new dawn as I liked the atmosphere it created in game and I changed the colours around. The little things can really change the feel of the game with the wind zones being great to give it a more real feeling to it. It also made me think about how much work goes in for the smallest of details in games nowadays. I am starting to realise that the code is very robotic and getting easier and easier as these tutorials go on. The fading screen is simple enough too. It then got tedious with small things to fix with the axe as there were little problems with it. The importing part was interesting as I will need to do it in my project as it will help for buildings. The only problem I had was I struggled to get the house to not look shiny and fake as much. I really got into these tutorials this week and wanted to watch more of

Games Decisions

Image
This weeks reading talks about game flow through cosyness. They talked about how certain games can make you have less worries and fear such as Stardew Valley as you don’t need to worry about shelter or feeding or death. This means that you have to have better content in the game to keep people entertained. As a certain amount of fear is needed. I myself agree that the fear is almost enjoyable and some games will get me so worried and excited to get through it. Which makes it enjoyable. Cosyness can also have other associates in games such a a romance and cute and childlike. Just by mentioning this tons of games come to mind that you would associate with this. I found the read so interesting as it made me think more about games that have a cosyness. I usually brush them off as boring or just a game I couldn’t see keeping my interest but I could never figure out why but it’s because of the lack of fear and thrill in the games. What comes to mind when I think of cosy

Game Vision Statement

Image
The game genre planned will be adventure fantasy. This will entail the main character a hamster in a hamster ball who has escaped from his home. This will allow you to explore the world and try and find acorns to eat and store in its mouth. All while trying to fight off cats and animal control. The maps will be as intricate as can be with some secret holes and tubes that only the hamster can fit in. There will also have the hamster ball as an extra life just like in mario when he gets bigger it acts as a second life. I will also need to figure out how to make the hamster ball spin and it will take time to make the buildings and the town style. I can either do in a country side or in a big city. I probably will pick whichever is easiest.

Games MDA

I like the video describing the differences between mechanics, dynamics and aesthetics as I know a lot of people were asking what they were when writing about there own game design asking for the context they could use it. I also think if the video had a voice over reading out the writing or talking about them more in detail it would be easier and I would have more retention. It helped the way the video cleared up the difference between mechanics and dynamics as I do sometimes get them mixed up especially with the grey areas. When I first clicked to read the MDA I was a bit over whelmed with the amount of writing. "By moving between MDA ís three levels of abstraction, we can conceptualize the dynamic behavior of game systems. Understanding games as dynamic systems helps us develop techniques for iterative design and improvement" This is talking about how each part of MDA can help understand what people want and almost control how they will act in the game while giving them th

Feedback Strategies

Image
I read Be a Mirror as my first article "When students develop a growth mindset about their reading ability, they believe that their hard work, struggle, and opportunities for problem solving are all important and valuable parts of the learning process. When students develop a fixed mindset about their ability, they believe their reading level, skill level, and proficiency are static and not much can be done to change them. With a fixed mindset comes resistance to working hard and putting extra effort in because there is really no point."   I feel like this is a problem that everybody goes through and that you get to a point where you feel like you can not improve anymore and that you begin to stagnate that will also become very frustrating for yourself as you are used to improvement and this can cause frustration and lack of belief in ones skills or ability's. Feedback can help with this as it can help be that push in the right direction if the feedback is given correctly

Game Idea Research

Image
The idea I am focusing in on is a hamster who has escaped the house from its owner in a hamster ball and is exploring the outside world for the first time. Some mechanics I was thinking of having is an attack against enemy's like cats and animal control. Im not sure what I would do as the attack move though as there are many ways I could do it. I could do a similar one to sonic the hedgehog and spin fast or jump on top of them. I could also give him a weapon which would be easier to do probably. Another mechanic is that the hamster ball can act as a barrier/ second life like in mario when he gets bigger from eating a mushroom. I feel like it would be a good and interesting mechanic to add as it will enable me to make the game more difficult. The last mechanic is a simple one but it gives an objective to the game which is for the h amster to collect something around the map. What the character would be based on Source

Unity Tutorial 02

Image
The file setup can be tedious creating empty after empty. It was a little confusing to get my head around it but after a while it made sense to do it. The coding is getting a lot easier and I'm beginning to get a feel for it the more I do it. Its useful that the water is pre built into the unity programme. Its a useful. I find the shortcuts are a great help with working at a fast pace. I was originally worried about the look (as much as Shaun told us not to) as I felt it looked too rpg/mmo like, But after seeing how much you can change the textures and overall look of things in the game it put those worries to the back of my mind. The crosshair makes it feel a lot more like a game. As before it felt like a simulator rather than a game for some reason. It might due to the fact that we are so used to having a crosshair in a game thats a first person game. The ray casting was a little harder to grasp but after going over that part in the tutorial a few times it helped me understand. I

Game Elements

Image
We should expand our vocabulary in the use of describing games in games design and about the overall game. We use "That was fun" or "I don't know, that wasn't much fun" instead we should be dissecting the game into the fundamentals and components of it and talk about what works and what doesn't and explain your thoughts on why. But because a game can be so brad this can be a daunting challenge and seems like you don't know where to start. Design has struggled to to evolve as much as its counter parts due to the lacks of ability to critique it. Designs have been similar in games for the past few years with not much of a leap in the graphics. This could be due to people not being open for change and appreciate the nostalgia almost or they're too used to it. It may also be down to the fact that the technology has advanced for graphics to get better and change but it can be very costly and a lot designers are catering to a broad spectrum of people. T

Feedback Thoughts

How to Get Past Negativity Bias in Order to Hardwire Positive Experiences  this is the first article I chose to read. This talks about how we are very negatively evolved with our brains taking in more of the negative stuff around us rather than the positive. Which I think is really accurate as many people put themselves down for the work and have a constant feeling of it not being good enough or not having confidence in yourself. As I know I really do struggle with those things. This post teaches you how to re-hard wire your brain to take in more of the positive mindset. I found that some of them were very useful and interesting ways of  trying to change your mindset Why rejection hurts so much — and what to do about it  this is the second article I chose to read. I found this quote really interesting "The greatest damage rejection causes is usually self-inflicted. Just when our self-esteem is hurting most, we go and damage it even further." As I said in the first paragrap

Game Brainstorm

Image
My first idea I have for my game is an obstacle style game where you have to jump over gaps and time running through blades all while collecting gems to pass through to the next level. If you fall down a gap or get hit by a blade you go back to a checkpoint or to the start. Each level would have a different theme or style look. Each level will get more difficult with things like the level art affecting what you can see making it harder. I like this idea because I enjoy these challenge games and I feel like it wouldn't be too hard to produce. I guess you could say it would be similar to the game mirrors edge a little bit. This is what I would say best describes the game. Here is an example of it My second idea is about an alien who crashed on earth and is looking for parts for his ship to leave. But he is being chased by the FBI so has to deal with them while looking for pieces. The alien will have a gun and can shoot the FBI agents. There will be cows that you can abduct/absorb

Unity Tutorial 01

I learnt that unity only uses c sharp for coding now, as I thought there were multiple languages unity uses depending on the platform. I found how you can select where the lighting comes from very interesting as I know that takes a lot to do. The terrain editing reminded me of age of empires custom maps which was one of my favourite modes in the game. It is not as difficult as I thought it would be and I actually found it quite enjoyable messing with the terrain. As I was following the second tutorial I was getting worried there would not be any use of particles to make it look more professional but as I went on to the third tutorial I saw that we were using trees and grass. I was surprised at how much custom ability there is. It will take me a little while to get used to writing some of the scripts. I found the tutorials were easy to follow and the voice over was clear and concise. These tutorials have furthered my excitement to jump into the game design project. I really am enjoying

Game Design

Image
Part 1 I like how the first reading piece address' the similarity in a lot of games and how they struggle to find how they differ. I really agree with this as many fps (first person shooters) are very similar hence why I stopped buying them especially how they now produce sequels that are basically the same game with slight changes in visuals and concept/time for the same high or sometimes a higher price. They also talk about how the older games are novel but were hits. I feel that older games were more focused on story line as multiplayer online was not an everyday thing. This means game designers and developers these days have more work and more focus drawn out. Costing more resources and time which in turn adds up to the costly game prices we see today. I also had a good think about how board games are actually in the same lines of computer games with the same problems of saturation and the struggle of trying to find your niche that will sell well. The third article I also fou

Time Strategies

Image
I found this very useful and informative as I have always struggled with time management I either get things done last minute or really early there is no in between. I already am planning to try change that this year and use my time more wisely. I find staying in college to do the work rather than go home and do it makes a huge difference for me. The first post I read was  THE MYTH OF "TOO BUSY" by Tim Grahl  they talked about how we are never too busy but it is down to poor time management and not prioritising our time. He tries to change our view and tells you to cut out certain time wasters. He then gives steps into how you can change how you prioritise time. The second I read was  3 STEPS TO RECAPTURE TIME BY @JOYNICOLEM   I did not like how this one was such a big change for someone to implement into their life. I am a person of habit and routine so it takes a lot for me to change it Source

Technology Tools

Image
The blogging is easy and enjoyable. But I would like to really develop the look of my blog. So I am looking forward to using the programs to create your own graphics. The other tools I have used before and have a decent knowledge but I am always happy to refresh things and hopefully learn a thing or two about them that I did not know about. Class Assignments

Image
The assignments I most look forward to doing are the tech tasks, Wikipedia trails, unity and the projects. The reasoning I prefer these is that I am a very technical person who enjoys most things computer related. But what I do not look forward to is the blog posts as I absolutely dread writing. It is one of my least confident and most lacking skills and has been since secondary school. I do prefer how we have to write blog posts rather than a daunting long paper to write up. It makes the flow of writing better and I think it will slowly help to build up my confidence in my writing skills and improve them overall. I like how extra credit is included and its a regular thing as this is the first module that it has been a thing which I think is beneficial for learning and students who need to catch up. The Wikipedia trails I have kind of done before as there is a web game that starts you on a random wiki page and you must reach a given page with the least amount of clicks. Me writing a

Workshop 01

Image
Topic? This topic is completely new to me. I have tried to do my own try at coding mobile games years ago. But I never really got to get in depth as it was a lot for me to try teach myself at the time. But the workshop was something I found interesting but I felt it was not explained as I struggled to realise what exactly i was supposed to do. But it was a good way to learn about how to think about projects Delivery? The delivery I felt was a little  confusing but the fact we were working in groups helped with this exercise and also gave more insight into it. I found that once we got it that it was kind of repetitive. If it was on another subject like multiple samples it would have kept my interest a little more. I really enjoy working in groups but I also feel like it could be a downfall as we ended up talking off topic a little. The interactivity is really good though I find that it makes me remember things better and it makes the time go by quicker rather than listening and sitt

My Favourite Game

Image
My favourite game is Counter Strike: Global Offence. csgo logo I like the learning curve on the game as its not just a standard first person shooter. There is good graphics but they're not too heavy on your machine. the graphics in csgo Its a very team based and reliant on random players you are matched with.
